1996 Halloween:

Well, well, well... Hallowe'en came and went this year and, again, a grand time was had by all those that got together to haunt a garage...

The cast:

Brian White; Behan Webster; Richard, Gina, & John Cook; Takashi Toyooka; Malcolm Latorre; Cheryl Smith; Snoopy Harper; Andrew Beere;

The layout:

It started innocently enough: a few meetings in the preceding weeks to decide what to do. The week before was when things got interesting.

We started by clearing out Richard's garage and plotting where to put walls. The basic scheme ended up looking like this:

MAP

Above the garage were two windows each with a glowing red eye. The whole garage looked a bit like a gaping mouth. The walls were made of hung black plastic and there was almost no light within except for a strobe light in each hall that would flash occasionally (ruining any night vision).

Okay... To explain everything. All the important bits are numbered/lettered. I'll start at the entrance and work around.

1 - Bucket of water with dry ice:

We had 30lbs of dry ice to spread around in various buckets to create a kind of eerie fog on the floor. This particular bucket would sometimes collect a bit and then the wind would carry the fox over the driveway.

2 - Cheryl's station:

A slit in the plastic near the floor allowed her to reach out and grab for people legs. Very effective. In fact, one young woman started calling for her boyfriend who had gotten a little ahead. "Steve, come back here!"

3 - Automatic Shadow:

An electric eye across the floor would trigger a light behind the plastic whenever someone walked by. This projected the shadow of a man with glowing eyes directly beside them. Visitors and Monsters

4 - Snoopy's Station:

More leg grabbing.

5 - Smoke Machine:

Controlled by Snoopy, this was a theatrical smoke machine that would fill the hallway with smoke whenever someone entered.

(curtain to next hallway)

6 - Light & Eerie Music:

A cd player pumped out continuous spooky music to set the mood. A light was also present to illuminate the plastic a bit.

7 - Shadows:

Someone behind the plastic could wave their hands and make shadows on the plastic that appeared on the plastic. Hands reaching and clawing at the young victims seemed to be a favorite.

8 - Billowing Wall:

A fan at the end kept this wall billowing in and out.

9 - Haunted Mask:

From the far end, this was barely noticeable as two red dots, but as they approached they found a hideously deformed face with two glowing eyes.

A - Another bucket with dry ice:

See (1).

(another curtain)

B - Workbench:

A table covered in beakers and vials of colored liquids and skulls with lights inside them. One container had air bubbling through it and others had dry ice in them to create a fog over the table. Spiders and snakes covered any open surface. A black light shone down to give everything a strange glow.

C - Jacob's Ladder:

One of Malcolm's creations, the classic climbing electric spark. Very effective in the dark.

D - Blood Pump:

The Watcher

Okay, a jar with red liquid squirting up into it.

E - The Watcher:

(Brian, Malcolm, and Behan) Someone to sit and watch the table so nobody got too close to the ladder or tried to steal anything. With a glowing hockey mask and a big skeleton hand, people tended to back up just a bit into...

F - Andrew's Station:

The Green Beast

With a painted face and big gorilla hands that had a tendency to land on people's shoulders, the beast scared almost everyone who backed into him.

(exit and get candy)

Stories:

It was quite the adventure and the kids seemed to love it. One group went back and got their mother telling her she just _had_ to go through. We had fun with her! I know everybody has their favorite memory from the night, but since I'm writing the description, I'll write about mine.

Another victim

I guess that's the story for this year. Until next year...
